CALIFORNIA FETID ADDERSTONGUE

CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANT STORYTELLING PROJECT

SCOLIOPUS BIGELOVII

FAMILY: LILIACEAE

Find this tiny understory plant blooming in winter when the old-growth coastal redwood forests is alive with water. It blooms when the ephemeral waterfalls and streams are full, the plant growth is fresh and green, and mosses and soil are damp. Look for it especially where small streams cross the trail. The green leaves with purple mottling ere easier to spot than the flowers.

California Fetid Adderstoungue also called slinkpod

Behind the scenes of this plant portrait. I like using neutral backdrops to photograph plants to call attention to their colors and shapes. I usually carry mat board with me to use. I didn’t have that with me the day I made these photos but I did have a 8.5”X11” piece of preschooler’s artwork that had been forgotten in the back of the car and was able to use the back side.
